The Area

Cheshire is a ceremonial county, consisting of 4 unitary authorities, and is named after a medieval dukedom that existed in roughly the same area as modern day Cheshire. This Dukedom fought in the War of the Roses on the side of the Red Rose, against Yorkshire and the White Rose, and historically was a very strategically important location due to its border with whales. Cheshire often being a battleground for Welsh and English forces attempting to invade each other’s land through the north. So the area has a good number of castles and old medieval forts dotted along the Western territory.
There are several things industries in Cheshire such as Cheese, salt, chemicals and silk. In 2009 Cheshire County Council was abolished and was replaced by Cheshire East and Cheshire West. Warrington was added to Cheshire. In April 2009, Cheshire County Council abolished and replaced by two new unitary. The Cheshire Gap covers an area which separates North Wales and The Peak District. There is a sandstone ridge and is known as the Mid Cheshire Ridge it is a 34 mile footpath from Frodsham to Whitchurch passing Delamere Forest, Beeston Castle.

East Cheshire is the largest of the 4 unitary authorities in the County of Cheshire, with a population of around 380,000 people, which is about 40% of the total population of Cheshire. East Cheshire is mostly green-belt land, taken from 3 former boroughs. East Cheshire does have large built up areas though, mostly in the towns of Crewe, Macclesfield and Wilmslow. East Cheshire was, and still is, an important part of the North West rail network; and borders Trafford Park which historically was the largest industrial park in the world.
