Salford is a city within a city. The whole of this Salford city is enclosed within Greater Manchester, having its own council and city hall separate from Manchester city.

Salford also has its own city library, university, and at one time had residence in its own county borough before it was rolled into Swinton in 2011.

Salford’s more recent well-known attractions can be found in Salford Quays. This area, previously home to “The Manchester Ship Canal Company”, played an important role in the expansion of Manchester, Salford and the surrounding area from 1894 to 1982 when it closed.

Salford Quays has since been re-developed. First with the Lowry theatre and gallery, devoted to the famous artist L.S. Lowry and has more recently the addition of Media City Uk, which acts as a HQ for several important media organisations like ITV and the BBC. This also grants Salford University easy access to one of the UK best facilities for studying media anywhere in the country.
